The above description is accurate to the breed and
typical of almost every boxer dog – this is what you have got!
We don’t suggest for a moment that you try to change it, as to
do so would be to deny this wonderful breed it’s temperament and
personality. We do suggest
that you are able to control this exuberance and teach your boxer how to
behave under various circumstances.
To do so will ensure a happier life for both of you. Socialising Your Boxer PuppyAfter the initial innoculations are completed and effective, we recommend taking your puppy in to environments where it gets used to mixing with a range of other people. Road walking, open markets and resorts are ideal, so long as you are able to ensure that unaware feet don’t hurt junior. Parks and many of the nature reserve areas (under proper control) are also good locations to socialise your boxer.
You should also let your puppy mix with other dogs,
again, under correct control and supervision.
This will teach the puppy to accept other dogs without a show of
fear or aggression on each occasion. Obviously,
be careful which other dogs the puppy is exposed to – they’re not
all as friendly as we may wish them to be! Training Your BoxerOverall, we most strongly recommend that you undergo some level of training with your boxer. Obedience training at all levels is available at West Lancs Boxer Training Club every week, from our City and Guilds qualified trainer. Obedience training follows a number of grades, from the basic commands (sit, stay, lie, come, etc.) through to certificates up to the most advanced levels of obedience and communication. It’s up to you how far you wish to go with training your dog, but you should ensure that a basic level of control and understanding exists for both of your sakes. A good benchmark to aim for is the Kennel Club’s “Good Citizen” award for the dog’s ability to display a level of understanding of the most rudimentary commands - our trainers will be able to advise you on this. For those boxer owners who wish to show train their dogs, we have ring-craft training classes, held by experienced exhibitors. Click here for details
